It's been a little over a month since McKenna's first birthday and I still can't believe she's one! Even after 400 days on this Earth she still continues to amaze me. I knew I wanted to commemorate the occasion with a cake smash photo shoot and these photos did not disappoint. I think they are the most beautiful pictures of my little girl that I've EVER taken (#humblebrag)! I learned a few things while attempting to get these photos taken that will definitely help you out as you plan and take your little one's cake smash photos at home.
2. Upgrade your equipment. Everybody knows phone cameras are just as good as point-and-shoot and DSLR cameras, so you don't have to go out and buy a new camera just for these photos. If you want crisp, sharp photos use a tripod to keep your phone or camera steady. The shakiness of your hands can make the pictures blurry, so use the self-timer or a remote if you can.
3. Look for natural light. Like I mentioned in my Monthly Milestone photo tips natural light is your best friend. If you can take your photos outside, great! Try not to shoot in direct sunlight or you'll end up with photos with lots of shadows. If you have to take pictures indoors, use a room with lots of natural light.
4. Get help. I seriously don't think I could have gotten these photos taken without McKenna's dad. He helped her dig into the cake, fixed any props that needed rearranging, the list goes on and on. Make sure you have an assistant that can take direction so you can get the perfect snaps on your little one.
5. Keep it simple. It's so easy to go overboard when you have so much to choose from when it comes to cakes, props, backgrounds, outfits, etc. If you don't keep it simple you end up with photos that are too busy or cluttered. Trust me, Mama, you'll have enough to worry about without overcomplicating things.
6. Keep shooting. Keep taking pictures as long as baby is happy. Take photo after photo so you don't miss any of those adorable smiles. You can always delete the bad ones later, but I guarantee you won't want to!
These photos are something that I will cherish forever and the fact that they were taken at home make them much more special. If you have any tips for taking photos of your little ones please leave them in the comments below!
