3 Things I Did With My First Child That I DEFINITELY WON'T Do With My Second Child (& 3 I Definitely Will Do!)

Monday, October 29, 2018

Happy #MotherhoodMonday y'all! Now that McKenna is a toddler I keep getting the question about when we're going to have another child. The answer is always," Not anytime soon!" but that doesn't stop me from thinking about what I would do differently, if given the chance. Keep reading for 3 things I did with McKenna that I definitely WILL NOT do with my second child and 3 things that I definitely will do!

WILL NOT #1: CO-SLEEPING

Since my boyfriend works at night, I started co-sleeping with McKenna when she was about 3 months old. It was definitely easier for us to breastfeed at night and for us both to get a bit more sleep. Now that she's older it's a little...different. She tosses and turns and kicks and throws her body into me which makes it a little harder to get a good night's rest. Don't get me wrong: I love having her close by and waking up to her smiling face in the morning, but I would love to enjoy a peaceful night's sleep just a little more. I will definitely stick to using a separate crib for our next child and keep them in there no matter what.

WILL DO #1: BREASTFEEDING

I LOVED breastfeeding and I couldn't believe how easy it was once we got the hang of it! The health benefits for mom and baby alone are enough reason for me to deal with the hassle of leaky, engorged boobs and living my life in 3 hour increments.

WILL NOT #2: PACKAGED BABY FOOD

When it was time to start McKenna on solid food we went the traditional baby cereal/jars of organic baby food route. Now that I look back on it, organic baby food can get expensive! It would have been so much easier just to make her food from scratch or the next item on my Will Do List, which is...

WILL DO #2: BABY LED WEANING

I totally wish I would have done baby led weaning with McKenna. She's always been interested in whatever the adults are eating and it would probably have helped with picky eating.

WILL NOT #3: TOY OVERLOAD

She's only 15 months old, but our living room is almost completely run over with toys. I definitely plan on downsizing her arsenal and making sure our second child doesn't ever end up with this much stuff. My new approach to holidays and birthdays are to give experiences and memories that will last a lot longer than that new Tickle Me Elmo. I'm also asking that family members give her books over toys for birthdays and holidays as well.

WILL DO #3: READ

I started reading to McKenna in the womb and almost every day since she was born. Now she loves to 'read' (babble to herself) or have one of us read her a couple of stories. I love that she has developed a love for reading like me and I hope to continue this with my second child.

What are some things you definitely WILL NOT or WILL DO with your second child? If you already have 2 kids, what did you do with one and not the other? Please let me know in the comments below!
