3 Accessories to Upgrade Your Winter Style

After a couple of teasingly warm days, we are back to the chilly embrace of winter. It was nice shedding a few layers and not feeling like the Michelin Man every time I stepped outside! A couple months ago I shared the best coats for a stylish winter. Now that you've found the perfect coat, it's time to upgrade those boring hats, scarves, and gloves that are more functional than stylish. One of my favorite ways to brighten up these oh-so-dreary winter days is to add a bit of fun to any outfit with more fashion-forward accessories. Winter accessories in unexpected pops of color or a bit of faux fur can be just the right amount of sartorial flair to help you get through another polar vortex. Here are a few of my favorite cold weather accessories to brighten up any dull winter.

Ultra Violet

The past couple of years have been some of my favorite years for Pantone’s Color of the Year. 2017 brought us Greenery, a refreshing shade symbolizing new beginnings. In 2016 we got a two-for one with the beautiful shades of Rose Quartz (a blush pink) and Serenity (a soft baby blue). This year’s Pantone COTY is Ultra Violet: a vibrant purple that “communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points toward the future,” says Pantone.

I am not a big coat person; I prefer puffer vests and super thick sweaters, but this year I’ve done a complete 180! I am completely obsessed with the three trendy coat styles that are hitting all the stores right now: silver puffer jackets, millennial pink coats, and faux fur coats. If you consider your style to be sporty, classic, or daring, then you’ll want to keep reading for the prime picks I found for each trend!

Truly Versatile Style

Thursday, March 10, 2016

Today's outfit post is all about versatility. Versatile items make it so much easier to get dressed in the morning or for a night out. My favorite versatile items are all black and I don't know about you guys, but I'm more into black now that I am during the winter. It just goes with EVERYTHING and it's so easy to get dressed in the morning when everything you own is black. Of course, an all black outfit is made even better when army green, gold, and nude are added; It's one of my favorite color combinations for any time of year. This utility vest also goes with everything as well and I've worn it several times since I've gotten it.  One of my favorite ways is to layer it over a striped shirt which I did here and also over on Instagram. I don't know what it is about this vest and stripes, but they go perfectly together! I would love to layer it over a white lace or striped t-shirt dress for spring.

Wintermixing into Spring

Thursday, March 3, 2016

March is finally upon us! I really feel like the months of January and February really flew past. I'm actually super glad that we're trucking right along into spring. I feel like I'm always commenting on the weather so I won't say anything about it (I promise!) and just say that spring is one of my favorite seasons (after fall). I love shedding all those winter layers and trying out new trends. It's not fully spring yet so I'm still reaching for my chunky knit sweaters and boots. I love layering my sweaters with flannels and chambray shirts so this Madewell Wintermix cable knit sweater was a win-win for me. I love the transition from sweater to flannel shirt and the layering effect without the bulk.  I've already worn it twice and I received so many compliments on it! The cream and black color combination is a wardrobe staple for me because it can go with soooo many other colors. Keep reading to see what else I wore with this amazing find!

Winter White

Friday, February 12, 2016

As most of you are well aware, Virginia was hit pretty hard last month with a blizzard. I don't know the exact amount, but it was at least a couple of feet! I'd never seen so much snow in my life (maybe a slight exaggeration) so of course I had to go out and play in it. There's nothing I love more than fresh, untouched snow; it just evokes a feeling of peace and calmness. We had another mini blizzard a few days ago so I had another chance to go play in the snow and feel like a kid again.

We're Going to the Chapel

Monday, February 8, 2016

And we're gonna get married! No, I'm not getting married (yet), but the location for this shoot just makes me want to sing that song! There is the cutest little church about a block from my house and I love walking past it when I feel the need to stretch my legs and get out of the house. Enough about that and more about what influenced this outfit - Valentine's Day which is Sunday! Valentine's is a super casual holiday for me and I usually end up wearing jeans and a sweater. It was fun to get all dolled up for this shoot and I'm actually looking forward to going out this year.

Essential Winter Boots

Monday, February 1, 2016

Even if you don't live on the East Coast, you probably heard it was slammed with snow recently. It's become a running joke that some of the more Southern states are ill-prepared for the weather. We don't have a barrage of snow plows ready to go or crews sitting in wait to salt everything. It's no surprise that at the slightest hint of winter weather, classes are cancelled, businesses shut down, and roads are closed.

Now, one person can't control how prepared their city is, but you can certainly control how prepared you are for the weather. I'm not talking about what tools are in your garage; I'm talking about what clothes are in your closet. Above all else, you're going to need a few pairs of amazing boots when the temperature dips. Stepping in a puddle of frozen slush while wearing ballet flats is a mistake you only make once, and there's no better time to do some online shopping than when you're stuck inside and snowed in for the weekend. What better inspiration do you need to perfect your winter wardrobe?

Canal Walk Comfort

Monday, January 25, 2016

One of my goals for 2016 was to explore one new place in Richmond a month. This month's location is the Canal Walk in the downtown area. It's super close to Belle Isle, which I love, so I couldn't believe I hadn't poked around this area before. It was nice to just take my time walking and reading all of the interesting signs all over the place. I would love to revisit the area when it's a little warmer outside and walk around a bit more.I took quite a few pictures to document the trip which you can find on my Flickr. If you're more interested in what I wore to keep warm on this freezing trip then keep reading!

Truly Southern Style

Monday, January 18, 2016

If you've been reading my blog since the beginning (or lurking around my outfits tag) you'll know how much I love this Topshop scallop hem miniskirt. I first saw it on A Southern Drawl and I was instantly hooked. I've already styled it for summer here and fall here, so I knew I wanted to style it for winter too. I haven't come up with any ideas on how to style it for spring just yet, but I'll come up with something when the time comes. I'm so glad I bought this skirt when I did as it's become one of the most versatile pieces in my closet; I honestly feel like it works for any occasion and all seasons so I'm definitely getting my money's worth!

Chunky Knit Sweater + Duck Boots

Wednesday, January 13, 2016

I still can't believe winter is finally here. The Winter Heat Wave of 2015 is hopefully long gone, but you never know. I'm really praying for snow sometime before spring hits. This wintry outfit was the perfect opportunity to show off my latest Rocksbox pieces from Loren Hope and Gorjana. It's supposed to snow today, so I'm hoping to put this outfit in snowball fight action soon! The super thick knit keeps me warm no matter how cold it is outside. A chunky sweater is a great starting point if you're putting together an outfit featuring duck boots!

December Bucket List: Christmas Town 2015

Monday, January 4, 2016

On Christmas Eve, my stepmother got the family tickets to Busch Gardens' Christmas Town. I was so excited and thankful because I've been wanting to go for the past couple of years now. It was such a fun, festive atmosphere and the only thing that could have made it better was the weather; it was almost 70 degrees during our visit! Despite the heat, I had a great time with my family and I can't wait to visit again. Keep reading to see all the (unedited) photos I took!

To mimic everybody's thoughts from the last week: how crazy is this weather?! It was a balmy 70 degrees every day last week and Christmas almost didn't feel like Christmas with this heat. Despite the weather  I was able to spend some well needed quality time with my family in beautiful Williamsburg. If you ever get the chance to visit Williamsburg, Virginia, I highly suggest you do; I always have so much fun whenever I go!

Winter Essentials

Tuesday, December 22, 2015

Today is the first official day of winter which means it's time to pull out all the essentials! Time to pull out the heavy jackets, sweaters, scarves, and socks hiding in the back of your closet. This time of year means staying warm no matter the sacrifice and who says staying fashionable has to be one of those sacrifices? My list is sure to keep you warm and in style! Keep reading to see what's on my list and if you didn't catch my Autumn Essentials, then you can check those out here

Fun with Flannel

Friday, December 11, 2015

An fall/winter outfit inspiration post featuring a plaid flannel shirt, J. Crew Factory vest, and boots.

Who doesn't love a good, comfy flannel this time of year? I know I do! These babies are so versatile - you can wear them under a vest, sweater, or dress for additional warmth or tied around your waist as an edgy, yet functional accessory. My tip for buying flannels: check out the men's section! The buffalo check flannel I wore in my Edgy Friendsgiving look came from the men's department of H&M. They ran out of my size and I was lucky enough to spot it as I was browsing. It was even cheaper than the women's version! Keep reading to see where I found this awesome flannel shirt!

On the Hunt

Thursday, December 3, 2015

An outfit inspiration post featuring a J. Crew Factory herringbone vest, J. Crew shirt, and tall navy Hunter boots.

Navy and grey has to be one of my most favorite color combinations ever. The colors go with almost anything, why not combine them? I wore a similar color scheme in my 50 Shades of Grey outfit post, which also featured this J. Crew Factory herringbone vest! My top is an oldie, but goodie from my Fall is Coming post

I wore this outfit for a walk to the library and exploring Randolph-Macon's gorgeous campus with my boyfriend. Can you believe I've lived in this town for a year and hadn't explored the grounds?! I've made a promise to myself to get out and explore the city more in the New Year. We walked along fraternity row and admired the houses we thought only existed in movies and TV shows. I can't wait to explore more of the campus in the upcoming months. The school has an amazing Southern feel about it. It's such a small, intimate campus nothing like my old school. The only thing they have in common is the colors!

My Hunter boots are a Christmas gift to myself that I couldn't resist opening early! I got such a good deal on them during Revolve's Black Friday sale (They ended up being $105!). The weather is calling for rain this week so they came just in time. They're surprisingly comfortable too! Combined with my knee-high socks, they kept my feet nice and warm. I chose to get the matte version of these boots because they seemed like they wouldn't get scratched as easily. Don't get me wrong, I would still love a pair of red gloss Hunters to add a pop of color to any outfit. Thanks for reading and enjoy your Thursday!
